Applications
- Used in the manufacture of mechanical parts for the metal-mechanical, construction, screw, automotive, couplings, fasteners (tensioners for structures), shafts, bushes, etc., industries.
- Develops surface hardness through thermochemical treatment of carburizing or carbonitriding, with a soft and tough core.
- Used as a clamping fork in the transport industry and as a clamping anchor in the construction industry; cold bending should be done slowly, uniformly, and in a single event, using a bending guide mandrel with a diameter at least twice that of the bar to be bent.
- Can replace AISI 12L14 steel, as long as high-volume production is not required.
Characteristics:
- Low carbon steel with optimal forgeability when hot, excellent cold formability, and very good weldability.
- Its machinability is lower compared to steels in the 11 and 12 series; according to SAE J414a, it has a machining capacity of 70% compared to AISI 1212 steel (100%).
- As a hot-rolled finish, its mechanical properties and hardness are below those mentioned above, except to a lesser depth; refer to ASTM A108-13.
- As peeled and straightened, defects inherent in the hot-rolling process may have been eliminated, without guarantee unless expressly agreed upon.
- The cold-drawn process provides a level of surface hardening, as well as a slight improvement in machinability.
