Applications
- For the manufacture of bolts, nuts, screws, connections, automotive parts, etc., where production volumes are high.
- Ideal for machining in automatic lathes.
- Can replace AISI 1018 steel, as long as it is not subjected to welding processes.
- Can substitute for AISI 1045 steel in applications with lower mechanical stress (load, bending, etc.), where total hardening and welding processes are not required.
Characteristics:
- Considered the most machinable steel, according to SAE J414a, 193% more machinable relative to steel 1212 (100%).
- Machinability is attributed to the combination of sulfur, manganese, and lead; the latter allows for cuts of greater depth and speed, significantly improving the surface finish of components made with this steel.
- Low forgeability, both in cold and hot conditions, and low weldability compared to other carbon steels such as 1008, 1018, 1045, etc.
- The most common commercial presentation is as cold-drawn, providing a smooth finish and better dimensional uniformity.
